Clear Linux* Project

for Intel® Architecture

The Clear Linux* Project for Intel® Architecture is a distribution built for various Cloud use cases. We want to showcase the best of Intel Architecture technology and performance, from low-level kernel features to complex applications that span across the entire OS stack. We're putting emphasis on Power and Performance optimizations throughout the operating system as a whole.

Cloud Integrated Advanced Orchestrator

An easy to deploy, secure, scalable cloud orchestration system which handles virtual machines, containers, and bare metal apps agnostically as generic workloads. Implemented in the Go language, it separates logic into "controller", "scheduler" and "launcher" components which communicate over the "Simple and Secure Node Transfer Protocol (SSNTP)

Clear Containers

Containers are immensely popular in the cloud world.

With Clear Containers we're working on a way to improve security of containers by using Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT). We set out to build Clear Containers by leveraging the isolation of virtual-machine technology along with the deployment benefits of containers. As part of this, we let go of the "generic PC hardware" notion traditionally associated with virtual machines; we're not going to pretend to be a standard PC that is compatible with just about any OS on the planet. Why? By shedding the legacy baggage, our model provides a dramatically improved experience: it’s slimmer, simpler, safer and a lot speedier!

Linux-based operating systems contain the code of several hundred, if not thousands, of open source projects.

Clear Linux* for Intel® architecture stands its ground in the vast field of operating systems, having a unique approach to optimizing for various scenarios as shown in these benchmarks:

After months of architecture, coding and test we have released version 2.1.1 of the Intel® Clear Containers offering.
This year at DockerCon 17, we will demonstrate how Intel® Clear Containers continue to deliver all the agility and benefits of traditional containers with the security associated with VMs. Rather than choosing between speed and security, Intel Clear Containers provide the industry with the best of both worlds.

About the project

Clear Linux OS for Intel Architecture is focused on the Cloud. Our aim was not to make yet another general-purpose Linux distribution; sometimes lean-and-fast is better than big-and-universal.

While we do our best to describe marquee technologies on this website, there are many smaller optimizations and configurations to explore. We invite anyone with an interest in the Cloud to take a look and give it a spin.

Cloud Integrated Advanced Orchestrator (ciao) is a new workload scheduler designed to address limitations in current cloud OS projects.

The Clear Linux stateless configuration makes system administration simple and efficient. This greatly benefits the deployment of your applications in the cloud.
